Salt of the Earth

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus tells His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth…”

Jesus is not just telling them who they are, but also telling them what they do.  To better understand this passage of Scripture, we need to consider the uses of salt.

1) Salt brings zest/flavor. Salt is used to bring out and enrich flavors.  As believers of Jesus Christ, we are to bring out and enrich joy and hope in our own lives and in each other.

2) Salt is useless if it remains in the saltshaker. If our faith and hope in Jesus is not displayed in our lives, we are like salt in a saltshaker...useless.

3) Salt is a preservative. One task of the church is to help keep the world from self-destruction. The moment we take Christ out of the culture, we will surely rot and wither away.

4) Salt provokes thirst. We are to provoke thirst in those who don’t believe, and lead them to water...the living water, Jesus Christ.

5) If salt has lost its flavor, we need to see what is corrupting and contaminating us.  Pure salt doesn’t lose its flavor. Only contaminated salt does.  What is contaminating us that is keeping us from being the “Salt of the earth”?
