Preparation
The church season of Advent began as a time of repentance for Epiphany, which was the second-biggest baptism day in the early church. Fasting was once a part of Advent, as it often still is for Lent. Advent is a season of preparation not only for the celebration of Jesus’ earthly birth but for His promised return.
Think about all the practical preparations you make in getting ready for Christmas. What celebrations do you participate in leading up to Christmas Day? In anticipation of Jesus’ second coming, think about what preparations you should be making.
In the midst of your celebrations and activity, be deliberate — intentional — about spending time with the Lord and in His Word. Praise Him for who He is. Adore Him. Meditate on Scripture. Thank Him for the salvation He brought to us through the life, death, & resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free, From our fears & sins release us, Let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s Strength and Consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art, Dear Desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.
Born Thy people to deliver, Born a Child and yet a King, Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone, By Thine all-sufficient merit raise us to Thy glorious throne.
